Backstory
Sullivan Fortner and I met at the Manhattan School of Music back in 2008, in our first year of the master's program. Even then, we all knew Sullivan was going to go far. Fast forward 18 years, and he's now won three Grammy Awards, touring the world with his own trio when he's not on the road with his longtime musical partner, singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, who has a few Grammys of her own.
I was lucky enough to get Sullivan on my debut album, which I recorded as I wrapped up my year in New York. Ever since then, I've been thinking I HAD to make something with him again. So now, finally, it happened. And having Jorge Rossy on drums certainly didn't hurt either 😊

A month ago, Sullivan played a solo concert at Jazzhus Montmartre - the legendary Copenhagen venue where all the great American jazz musicians played back in the '60s and beyond.
It was a completely wild experience. He has this incredible surplus of energy, and plays in a way that seems to surprise even himself.
I was sitting next to three pianists and organists, who were all completely fascinated by Sullivan's left thumb, which he uses constantly to play melodies. As they put it: "That's the tenor!" -apparently something classical organists struggle with too.
I got to catch him backstage in the middle of the show - and as you can see in the photo, he and I were both happy to see each other.
