Thrilling energetic jazz album with unparalleled musical chemistry

Steep Steps is the second album from the three internationally celebrated instrumentalists Carl Winther, Richard Andersson and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts. Following the success of the debut “WAW” and an extensive US and European tour in 2024, the trio returns with Steep Steps, a record that captures the raw energy and dynamic interplay honed on stage. The tour, which included sold-out shows in Philadelphia and New York, as well as performances from Girona, Spain, to Reykjavik, Iceland, cemented the group’s vibrant synergy.

Listen to Steep Steps

  • "This is a trio that defies simple classification. They build their artistry not only by brilliantly playing their own compositions, but also by interpreting the classic canon of modern jazz with great respect for tradition. Steep Steps shows the trio playing Tadd Dameron's ballads Soultrane and McCoy Tyner's classics Inner Glimpse as well as the pianist's original compositions. All maintained in the convention of strong American swing and complicated European harmonic sensitivity."

    Era Jazzu
  • "Recorded in just one day, the album invites discovery through intensive exploration, with high-caliber jazz tradition as its primary inspiration. Over the course of five tracks—three original compositions by Winther and two jazz covers—the trio exudes infallible musical instinct, responding to one another with admirable tenacity and unfiltered spontaneity."

    Jazz Trail
  • "The Steep Steps recording   from the prestigious Copenhagen studio The V Recording is a tribute to what each of us imagines under the term jazz: swinging rhythms and a clear and confident piano. In some songs, the trio of musicians seem to actually go up steep stairs to high floors to meet the adrenaline from above. At other times, the recording settles into a balladic horizontal, so as to flow unhindered by dramatic elevations. In general, the music of this current album is built on modern jazz idioms based on respect for the traditions of the genre we love."
